Today, everything can appear to be "unprecedented." And sometimes they are. But history gives context and meaning for the present. Let me explain.
There is a lot of misinformation and ill-informed opinions that dominate our public discourse. My goal is to offer a bridge between academic and general worlds, highlighting the excellent work either being done or has been done by historians, religious studies scholars, and others who have dedicated their lives to understanding our past. I do this through my youtube channel, social media videos, and other forms of public engagement.
Periodic emails from me that provide links to my recent videos, highlight new scholarship, and offer reflections on current issues from a historical perspectives. (I promise they will not be frequent!)
By way of background, I am an award-winning author or editor of five books, two-dozen peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and over sixty op-ed essays in national outlets. I am frequently consulted by journalists, filmmakers, and documentarians on religious issues in general, and Mormon history topics in particular. My most recent book, American Zion: A New History of Mormonism (Liveright, 2024), received the Philip Schaff Prize for the Best Book in the History of Christianity from the American Society of Church History. You can find more background at my personal website.
